I'm not a perfect mom, I just play one on my blog

I read a blog recently that talked about food.  The mom was very careful to say she buys farm-fresh food, only organic fruits and veggies, blah blah blah.  Then she added how she fed her child a hot dog.  But she couldn't just say hot dog.  She had to specify it was nitrate free, turkey based, something or other.

But why?

Who cares?

Is she so afraid of being judged for giving her child a real hot dog that she must waste precious words of her post making it damn clear that it was a super-healthy hot dog?

Let me stand up and be the first to say I feed my kids real hot dogs.  Well all-beef ones, but still.

I didn't cloth diaper, not because I don't care about the environment, but because I'm lazy, and it's gross to me.  However, I am planning on buying some cloth pull-ups because it's cheaper.........

I didn't exclusively breast-feed, and my kids turned out fine.

My kids have ketchup almost every night at dinner.

My kids eat McDonalds.  Like once a week.  Ahhh! The horror!
(Amanda, if you read this, this is NOT directed at you.)

And they watch too much tv.

So judge away.

******************************

Here is the thing.  All the blogs I choose to read are great blogs.  Written by women who feel they are making the right decision for their children.  And I support that.  I'm not judging the nitrate-free hot dog mom.  I just don't know why it matters.  Can't you just say, I fed my kid a hot dog?  Why must us moms constantly try to prove that we are super-moms who do everything perfectly, who make ideal meals 3 times a day, create only educationally stimulating environments, don't allow our children to watch television, etc.

It's like we are too afraid of being judged, being slammed, and being spammed that we can't just say what we want. We have to be super-specific so as not to offend anyone.

Mommyhood isn't a competition about who does what better.

It's about comaraderie, solidarity, and support.

Now, I do have some wonderful mommy friends who EBF, cloth diaper, and only feed their children organic food.  And I think those mommys are simply wonderful.  So wonderful in fact, I am posting a link to this blog on my FB page, knowing that some of those mommies might look at this post.

And I am hoping that I have not offended anyone, because as I've said before, there is no right or wrong way to do this crazy thing called parenting.  YOU choose what is best for you and your children.  And I hope that while you are reading this, you aren't thinking: Man, she's a bitch.  So yes I am contradicting myself in my own post. Sometimes I just can't help myself.

I agree!!! I feel like we all do what we have to do to survive. To do what's best for our families! When I start getting judgemental, I check myself and say, that mom made that particular decision because it was what she/her family needed. (I made this realization one day as I happily handed over lollipops to the twins and Claire while leaving the grocery store and we do this EVERY grocery shopping trip)...I could care less what others think :)
Same here! You always crack me up!!

They'll live, and furthermore; they'll appreciate a Mom who survived and made it work.

No organic hot dogs here just plain old normal ones. I confess!

I used to be great when it was just my first born in fact he only ate all organic food until he was 3 years old when it got really pricy because we had kid number 2 also eating real food and well he only ate organic until he was 15 months.

Then poor Kitty only ate organic until she was like 7 months old. How the mighty have fallen.

LOL!!! I am in your blog and oh so proud!!! :) you sure it was not geared towards me??? I know I am crazy in the food department! We do the all natural, mostly organic, no nitrates/chemicals/food dye diet in this house...but, I'd don't do any preaching to the masses! I do have friends and co-workers who ask me questions, and I love sharing info - but under no circumstances do I ever judge (except for my one friend who gives her 5 year old daughter diet drinks all the time - and she wants me to judge her! LOL!)...but I have to say, that I have a co-worker/friend who is constantly judging me and my choices, and WOW is it frustrating! But that is a post for another day!
I love your posts Sarah - they make me laugh and nod my head in agreement and remind me why we are "friends!". And yes, Conor had yet to go to a McD's...and that is ok! :)

I agree!!! You know, in that case I'm a bad mom, haha. I fed my girls with "junk food" and for me the most important thing is that they eat.

This makes me giggle. A lot of my non-mom friends are like this about food, too! I never invite them over for dinner...

I love it!
While we cloth diapered, and I made our own baby food, it was out of necessity since they are so darn expensive here.
Meanwhile, we use the TV as a babysitter Saturday mornings, and Ethan eats pasta almost every night. Not a battle worth fighting!

PS. You're still supermom in my opinion

I use plain old unhealthy hot dogs too, heehee! I DO cloth diaper, but that is just the inner cheapskate in me coming out! :) I know I am always worried about what others (moms) think of me. I have gotten better at it because honestly, I just don't have the time to think about it all the time but it still haunts me from time to time.

Book Review...and a Giveaway!!!

I was lucky enough to win an ARC of When the Rogue Returns  from Sabrina Jeffries herself! I couldn't wait to read it.  After reading the first book in The Duke's Men series, What the Duke Desires , I was excited to see that this next book was about Victor Cale. In  When the Rogue Returns , Victor Cale is headed to Scotland to investigate a woman, Sofie Franke.  He has his suspicions that this woman is actually Isabella, his wife who disappeared on him ten years before.  He has spent the last decade searching to bring her to justice after she stole the royal jewels and left him to behind to deal with the authorities.  Isabella Cale, now known as Sofie Franke, has built a new life for herself and her ten-year old daughter after her husband ran off with the royal jewels. Are you intrigued yet? Victor and Isa's first meeting was great! Both blame the other for the missing jewels, and both are greatly suspicious of the other's motives.  Despite their renewed feel

The music filled my head as I drove my car along the winding river road on that dark and snowy night.  I had just left my grandpa's wake and was headed home... alone.....  My husband had the stomach flu, we had moved into our new house the day before my grandpa passed, and I was 5 1/2 months pregnant.  The baby boy inside me kicked along with the song, as I cried and listened to the words. Mama told me when I was young Come sit beside me, my only son And listen closely to what I say. And if you do this It will help you some sunny day. Take your time... Don't live too fast, Troubles will come and they will pass. Go find a woman and you'll find love, And don't forget son, There is someone up above. I've always found comfort in songs... the words of the artists resonating with me through even my darkest times. Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man is one of those songs that just happens to play on the radio at the precise moment that I need a remind

It's the most wonderful time of the year....

The countdown to Hallowe'en begins! Please note this is not the actual number of days until Hallowe'en. The picture was taken two days ago. The house is totally decorated, although I still could use a few more things ;) One of the cool new decorations I bought this year are these Halloween Pumpkin Wall Decals from Kohls.  I love them!  My structured, OCD self feels the mantle is too cluttered, but the spooky side of me just doesn't care. ;) How do you decorate for Hallowe'en?
